Well, I thought I'd start a thread here. I have 3 parables that talk about pretty much the same thing...just in 3 different ways. Leave it to Jesus to clarify so we get the idea for sure. Anyway, this is Jesus talking about the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin and the Lost Son. They can be found in Luke 15. a whole chapter just for the 3 of them! Well, first, Jesus talks about a shepherd and how if he had 100 sheep and one went missing, he wouldn't be satisfied with just the 99, he wanted that last one-even though it had strayed away from the shepherd. That talks about how God isn't happy when He has 100 or 1000 or a million of His children but one walks away...He isn't angry with His child but misses him or her so much that He actually goes out to find him or her. He doesn't passively wait, thinking "they'll come home when they're ready, no He's worried about them out there in the big, scary world, knowing how easily they could get hurt so He searches them out to find them and save them and bring them back home into safety and love. Next, there's the parable of the lost coin. Jesus talks about a woman who has 10 coins but loses one of them. Does she forget about it thinking "oh, it's just one coin" thinking of it the way we do when we drop a penny? No, she searches the entire house like a csi detective looking for evidence, leaving no rock unturned until she finds it. Then, when she does, what does she do? She invites all her friends and neighbours over for a party, just because she found that one coin. In the same way, God searches and searches, leaving no crook or nanny unlit, until He finds His lost child. And when He does? Talk about a party! When just one child of God repents and is found in God again, the entire host of heaven rejoices! They go crazy! and the best part is....it's just because of one sinner repenting and returning to God! Lastly, there's a really long parable about the lost son which a lot of people think of literally...which is fine because it is pretty literal, just replace the prodical the real life one(be it you or someone else) and replace the earthly father with our heavenly one. What's really cool about this parable is that when the lost son came home fully expecting to be a servant, if he could even get that job but instead, his father had been watching for him and started running (a very UNdignified thing to do back in the day...sometimes still today ) to go almost clober his son, not in a bad way but in a "I missed you soooooo much" kinda hug way and quickly reinstated hm into his sonship position...not that he'd ever been out of it but for the son's benefit of being reminded that he's a son not a servant and that's exactly what God does for us! Think about it.

Isn't it amazing how Jesus used stories to further explain things to us?!
